In Bengaluru, BBMP officials reported that the flow of sewage into the Koramangala stormwater drain has decreased significantly from 120 million litres per day to approximately 8 MLD as a result of the K-100 Urban Waterway Project. Despite this claim, nearby residents and businesses state that the foul odor from the water has not improved and that sewage-contaminated water continues to flow. The K-100 project, receiving Rs 175 crore in government funding for the redevelopment of the drain infrastructure, covers a 9.2-km stretch from KR Market to Bellandur Lake. The BBMP engineering department anticipates the project's completion by the end of 2024.
In efforts to prevent sewage from entering the Koramangala Rajakaluve, BBMP officials have installed a 5 MLD capacity sewage treatment plant near Kumbaragundi to purify the sewage before releasing it into the stormwater drain. Additionally, concrete rings have been placed in the middle of the rajakaluve near Shantinagar, along with the plantation of specific plants to naturally absorb and purify the water. BWSSB has commenced the construction of a sewage treatment plant near Shantinagar, expected to be operational by year-end to halt sewage entry into the rajakaluve.
BBMP highlights the completion of various aspects of the project, including retaining walls, ground-level bridges, decorative lighting, landscaping, granite fixing, pedestrian pathways, and grills. Service roads have been built on both sides of the rajakaluve, with pipelines in place to prevent rainwater from the roads from entering the drain. The project was initiated by BBMP in 2021 with the aim of improving the condition of the Koramangala Rajakaluve. To meet the 2023 deadline, it was later unable to meet several deadlines.
